Our Search for a New Chairperson

The Cardiff Amnesty Group is looking for a new Chair to lead our campaigning at a vital time for standing up for human rights across the world.

As a global movement of over seven million people, Amnesty International is the world’s largest grass-roots human rights organisation. We investigate and expose abuses, educate and mobilise the public, and help transform societies to create a safer, more just world.

Local groups carry out a wide range of activities from campaigning on individuals at risk to raising money for human rights. Most of the time groups work within their local area, engaging their communities in campaigns, but they also get together at annual Regional Conferences and at the AGM.

Cardiff Amnesty International is an award winning group, established thirty years ago we have campaigned on numerous human rights issues over the years including:

  • Letter writing and other forms of action on behalf of individuals whose rights have been abused.
  • Raising awareness about human rights through the local and national press
  • Organising events and stalls and getting involved in local activities
  • Lobbying MPs and MSs to hold the government to account on human rights
  • Campaigning on the issues that matter, including women’s rights, torture, individuals at risk and the death penalty
  • Fundraising to support the work of the wider Amnesty movement

Recent high profile campaigns have centred on the plight of Iranian-British dual nationals detained in Iran such as Mehran Raoof, or campaigning to end excessive cellular confinement for UK prisoners. Each year the group organises Stand Up in the Park, a flagship human rights comedy night in cooperation with the Cardiff Open-air Theatre Festival.

In recent years the group has worked in partnership with other charities and organisations organising events including The Welsh Centre for International Affairs, Welsh National Opera and Cardiff University.
